We recently shared our gear list on the blog…if you missed it you can find that post here. Today I am going to start a new little blog series on the lenses we own and what we use them for. 🙂

One of the biggest questions I get asked are what camera should I buy. And every single time I answer with…buy the best body you can afford but really invest your money in your LENS! I have upgraded camera bodies 5 times in the past 8 years….but the lenses I bought 12 years or more ago are still in my line-up. Glass lasts.

OUR FIRST LOVE-50mm

The first lens I recommend to anyone to start off with is the 50mm 1.8. It is a relatively cheap lens and can give beautiful results. I started with this lens 14 years ago. It was the first prime lens (a lens that doesn’t zoom but stays at one distance) in my arsenal. I shot 100% of my work with it when I first started out. It forces you to get creative when composing a shot. You have to move your feet if you want a closer or further back shot. This lens is pretty good in low light areas as well since it is super fast.

One of the best parts about this little lens is the beautiful depth of field. One of the things most people notice about photographs is how the subject pops and the background seems to disappear. This is because of that depth of field. If you shoot at the lowest aperature, your background will be more blurred and creamy.

I have since replaced that lens with it’s newer version the 50mm 1.4G. This is the lens that i use primarily in my newborn work. It provides beautiful crisp images and works great in low light. I love that this lens captures my subject pretty close to the same as it is seen with the human eye. I know that when I pose a baby, this lens will capture it just as I see it.
