couch dates

When we were young, every Friday and Saturday night we would hit the town and try out a new restaurant, see a movie or do something new. I would doll myself up and wait for Travis to come down my long driveway, watching for his car lights long before he arrived. He would usually bring me flowers and we would start the weekend, hand in hand as we drove down the road to our newest dating destination. We literally tried every restaurant there was around us. Dating life was fun and adventurous.

Now that we are married with 5 kids, dates are few and far between. We have the occasionnal dinner out for birthdays and anniversaries, but rarely do we go without some kid in tow with us. Now our dating life has a new look and feel to it. It consists of us, in our pjs cuddled side by side on our couch likely under blankets watching whatever our newest TV obsession is. And I wouldn’t trade those late nights for anything. Usually we tell ourselves it will be just one episode of the show we are crushing on at the time but it ends up being 3 or more. And the next thing we know it is well after midnight and our kids will rise in a few hours. Yet, we find ourselves doing it all over again the next night.

We began this crazy couch dating with Downton Abbey. I think we watched the first season in one night. Literally. And then we went on to season 2 and 3. Then we had a huge break awaiting season 4 to hit the US so we picked another show. Chicago Fire. And we watched every episode available on hulu until we finished them all. Now the new episodes are a part of our weekly routine. We have added shows here and there but we always seem to find ourselves in the break of weekly tv finding something new to watch all in a row, one season at a time.

We have watched every single season of Law and Order SVU starting at season 1 and all the way to the current season, which is 16 I think. We have binged on gracepoint (and it’s British companion Broadchurch), criminal minds, the following, Sherlock and now we are on scandal. We have added show after show to our weekly list (how to get away with murder, elementary, chicago fire, chicago pd, parenthood, SVU, and agents of Shield).

And while it may seem silly, there is nothing I would rather do than share a couch date with my hubby! What are your favorite shows to watch with your significant other? We need some NEW ones to add to the list!
