Second Shooter Showcase

When I tell people that my husband Travis shoots weddings with me, I often get mixed emotions. Some people think it is awesome (and it totally is) but others are hesitant. I have had people comment on how it must be nice to not have to pay another person, etc. And in some ways I think they may doubt that they are getting a qualified second shooter. Today, I am sharing my favorite reasons why working with my hubby on wedding days (and the occasional session) is such an awesome value to my clients!!

1. He knows me.

My hubby knows me better than anyone. He knows when I am overwhelmed or when I am in a groove. He knows what I need and he can anticipate it. He knows the parts of the wedding day that stress me and steps right in to help out. He knows to be thinking ahead about locations or what’s next while I am focusing on the task I have right in front of me. We compliment each other so well because not only do we do business together, but we do life together too!

2. This isn’t our first rodeo!

We have been doing weddings for 10 years together!!! While I am the first to admit in the beginning I played a much larger role than him, now we are pretty equal parts on a wedding day. What he does is invaluable. I couldn’t deliver the quality of work that I have without him. We have done this so many times that we have the wedding day down to an exact science. We can anticipate each other and I can rest easy knowing that what I need is covered.

3. We think differently.

While I am capturing portraits, at times I get lost in the “big picture” of it. I want this epic portrait that showcases the stunning scenery, where as he lives for those ultra close-ups! IT makes for a great balance. Furthermore he likes different angles and lighting than me. And it produces a diverse gallery for my clients.

4. We each have our strengths.

I am TERRIBLE about grabbing candid shots of people at receptions and cocktail hour. I wish I could channel the inner snipper mode and capture people without notice, but I fail miserably. He is so good at this! While my strengths are styling those bridal details and capturing portraits. While I am taking the lead in those, he is shooting the moments in between and producing such fun memories of the day.

5. He really does rock.

I know I am biased since I adore this man of mine, but seriously you guys. He is an awesome photographer. I am often blown away by how good he is!

Ok, so now I just want a husband. But, to a certain extent, I know exactly what you mean! I ALWAYS shoot weddings with my sister! We run the business together, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s not my husband, and aside from living together, every reason rings true with us as well!

  2. We get the same reactions – I don’t think people realize how awesome it is to work with their spouse!!!

  3. Mindy says:

Love this post, so open and honest. I love shooting with my husband too for all the same reasons.

  4. Jessica says:

    Live this!!!!

  5. Misty says:

Those are some amazing moments he was able to capture!! What a fun thing to be able to work so closely!

  6. These are beautiful! He did a great job with each shot. And how cool that you guys balance each other out so well while shooting! This is our dream, but we’re just struggling to keep our heads above water with 2 littles, his teaching job, and my photography…someday! Brick by brick!

I’m hoping to have my husband second shoot with me starting 2017. I think there are lots of amazing reason why it’s a great idea.

  8. Jill says:

I value my second shooter husband SO much and loved reading about your value of yours!
