Life as an artist…

Recently a friend and fellow photographer and I were chatting about her decision to leave the photography industry.  It is rather sad as she is very talented, but she was tired of chasing down work in a flooded market.  If you look on facebook you see another photographer start up a business almost daily.  We live in a photo filled world and so many people want to make money taking photos.  I remember when I first started my business I had some great advice given to me.  I was told to shoot for me, but run my business for others.  The reality of this business is that it is about 10% taking photos and 90% business.  But that is another post.

I share this because, despite the challenges I face as a business owner, I will never walk away.  You have to want this and love this to keep on going.  Not all parts of the job are amazing (a lot are though!).  But one thing that continues to drive me is finding art in a new way.  It always surprises me what turn I take next.  Lately, I have been loving maternity sessions.  Recently while we were at the coast, we had a crazy trip and while we were all ready to pull our hair out, I discovered something amazing.  We weren’t even supposed to be in that spot.  We ended up there after a long night of changed plans and finally I knew why we were there.  I look across the coastline and I found the most breathtaking spot.  Most people probably didn’t see the same thing, but I squeeled and said, “I HAVE TO SHOOT THERE!”  and the more I pondered that spot, the more I wanted to do a maternity shoot there.  You see, few things are more beautiful in life than pregnancy and mother nature.  And together they are an amazing combo.  So, I came home with a new beach trip date and a mission to find a maternity model.  I posted it online and I had a TON of people inquire and then FIVE people line up that ended up falling through for a reason or another.  I had almost given up after that fifth person’s session got cancelled due to rain.  I started to just let it go.  And then I thought, just one more try.  I went back to the post on facebook and started messaging people that nominated someone else and told them to message me ASAP if they wanted to spot and along came Katelyn.  I knew the moment I saw her that she was the person I was MEANT to shoot at this spot.  She totally rocked her session, she was up for anything and she makes pregnancy look graceful and effortless!

and the light was almost gone but I was determined to use this next spot, so I just shot until it was almost dark! 2014-08-24_0008

Thank you Katelyn for allowing me to capture your baby bump.  I am so incredibly happy that I stuck to my passion and made this session come to life.  I have a few more of my dream sessions lined up this year and I love to watch them unfold!  SO stay tuned for that!
