THE JOURNAL

defining style

This year I have spent a lot of time reviewing my work, pulling and adding to my galleries, and really trying to make sure my best work is out there. It isn’t always an easy task as I am emotionally connected to most of my photos. I know the work that went into each one. I can go right back to that moment with just a thought. But when I think about what I like in a photo, it is easy to see my photographic style.

Here are a few things that I look for in a photo and I hope to deliver to every client.

1. Sharp, clear focus.
This should be a given. But when I am shooting couples or details or anything in between, I want it to be sharp and clear. Nothing worse than a ring shot with the diamond blurry or a couples portrait with their faces on the soft side. I want it to be tack sharp.

2. proper exposure.
when I am shooting, I always want my clients skin tones to be true to life. Not too dark and not too bright.

3. non-distracting backgrounds
Nothing is more annoying that having a beautiful couple with a power line in the background or a tree coming up from behind their head. I work really hard to angle my photos so that the background doesn’t take away from the shot.

4. Emotion.
Nothing makes me more giddy than capturing raw emotion. Whether it be a laugh, a smile or a tear. It just makes photos so perfect!

5. Good light.
Nothing makes a photo more beautiful than good light! It makes everything work! My favorite is backlit and golden light!

6. Beautiful nature
I love incorporating beautiful backgrounds into my portraits. Whether it be a gorgeous sunset, a breathtaking view or a scenic backdrop. I love how nature can add to a photo.

7. True to life edit.
I want my photos to be timeless and true to life in color.

8. Moody Black and whites.
I love how an image in black and white can speak so strongly. Some shots are just meant to be black and white!

I hope this gives a little insight into how I compose my photos and what you can expect from your session or wedding.
