Classic always trumps trendy.

Today I wanted to share something that has been on my heart for a while.

I was chatting with a friend of mine about work and the trends that seem to be growing.  You see this all the time in all aspects of life- clothing, tv, decor, diets, etc.  Something gets wildly popular and everyone jumps on board.  Until the next trend pops up.

I personally try hard to not jump on trends.  Because classic always trumps trendy in my book.

But there is so much behind WHY trends are just that- trends.  It constantly changes.  It isn’t consistent.  Trends come and go.  Some have long lasting power, but a lot just don’t.

Why shouldn’t I just follow the trend everyone else is doing?  Here is my philosophy.  I would rather be consistent than trendy.  Think of it this way.  You have a favorite restaurant.  You eat there all the time.  Let’s use Chickfila for example.  You love going there because you know you can enjoy your favorites.  You know you get service with a smile (“my pleasure serving you today”) and you get exactly what you expect.     Now let’s just say you go to Chick-fil-a one day and the menu has completely changed.  They decided to sell sushi instead of chicken because sushi is the new trend.  You hate sushi.  You wanted chicken but now all they have is sushi.  How do you feel? Pretty upset right?

I have worked so hard the last few years on building a brand that is true to me and that my clients can trust and rely on.  When you book me, you know that your photos will be bright and airy and colorful.  You know that I will spend time capturing your details, some gorgeous portraits as well as the moments in between.  You know that because I have shown that over and over again on this blog.  Each wedding I photograph, I share those things with you.  If I showed up to a wedding and said “I don’t feel like styling details today” and just skipped that part, you can imagine the bride would be disappointed.  Because she expected it.  Or if I edited their wedding in a completely different style just to be on trend.  It would be shocking!  Instead, I aim to do what I always do to the best of my ability.  It may not be the newest trend.  It may be a shot I have done over and over again, but my clients have come to expect that of me and I don’t want to let them down!

So today, I am sharing this because I hear so many people say things like- My photos aren’t moody like ____ is or I don’t enjoy photographing ____.  And today I give you permission to embrace YOU.  Do YOU!  Your clients will love it because they expect YOU.   Stay true to yourself.  That is the best thing you can do for your brand!
